Biggin Hill Primary School

Physical Education (PE)

Curriculum Intent

At our school, we are committed to providing a curriculum that is broad, balanced and ambitious, enabling all children to acquire the essential knowledge, skills and understanding they need to flourish academically, physically and creatively. Through our carefully sequenced curriculum, supported by the high-quality programmes from Get Set 4 Education, we ensure that learning is progressive, inclusive and purposeful from EYFS through to Year 6. Our curriculum fully reflects the requirements of the National Curriculum whilst providing rich, engaging and meaningful learning experiences.

We believe that every child is entitled to an ambitious curriculum that is accessible and sufficiently challenging for all. Our curriculum is designed to nurture confident, resilient and reflective learners who develop a lifelong love of learning, physical activity and creativity.

The key principles behind the design of our curriculum are to encourage our children to:

  • Be ambitious and take pride in their achievements.
  • Develop independence, curiosity and a love of learning.
  • Embrace challenge with resilience and determination.
  • Work collaboratively and demonstrate respect for others.
  • Appreciate creativity, self-expression and the diversity of the world around them.
  • Lead healthy, active lives and understand the importance of physical and emotional wellbeing.

Be confident, articulate individuals who can reflect on and celebrate their progress.

Implementation

Within Physical Education, a carefully sequenced progression of knowledge and skills enables pupils to develop physical competence, confidence and an understanding of how to lead healthy, active lives. Fundamental movement skills are introduced early and built upon year by year, allowing children to apply them across a wide range of sports and activities. Teachers provide appropriate challenge and support to ensure all pupils experience success, while promoting high expectations for effort, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Assessment is used to celebrate progress in both skill development and personal growth. Pupils regularly reflect on their performance and apply feedback to improve. Through inclusive practice and enrichment opportunities such as competitions, festivals and sporting events, children develop resilience, leadership and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity. Our PE curriculum inspires every child to embrace challenge, build confidence and recognise the value of perseverance and teamwork.

Impact

Our P.E. curriculum enables all pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead active, healthy lives. Through a broad and balanced programme of physical activities, pupils build fundamental movement skills, improve their physical fitness and develop competence across a range of sports. They learn the importance of teamwork, resilience, respect and fair play, while gaining confidence in both competitive and non-competitive environments. As a result, pupils leave primary school physically literate, motivated to participate in sport and physical activity, and equipped with the understanding and positive attitudes needed to maintain an active lifestyle beyond school.
