Biggin Hill Primary School

Art & Design

Intent

The Art and Design curriculum at Biggin Hill Primary is designed to provide a broad, balanced and progressive programme of study that fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum while nurturing creativity and self-expression. It sets out clearly what children should know and be able to do in Art and Design by the end of each key stage, ensuring a coherent journey of artistic development across the primary years. Through engagement with a wide range of artists, materials and techniques, children develop visual literacy, critical thinking and an appreciation of cultural and historical contexts in art. The curriculum aims to inspire curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in creative exploration, enabling all pupils to communicate ideas, emotions and experiences through artistic processes. We aim to give children every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond.

Implementation

Art and Design is implemented through a carefully sequenced scheme of learning that supports teachers in delivering high-quality, consistent lessons across year groups. Units are structured to build knowledge and skills progressively, with clear links between drawing, painting, sculpture, craft and design processes. Progression documents, planning materials and vocabulary development ensure that learning is cumulative and revisited in increasing depth over time. Lessons provide opportunities for children to explore materials, practise techniques, evaluate artwork and create their own pieces, while studying a diverse range of artists and traditions. This structured approach enables teachers to plan confidently and ensures that all children experience a rich and varied art curriculum.

Impact

The impact of the Art and Design curriculum is evident in the increasing confidence, skill and creativity demonstrated in children’s artwork and sketchbooks over time. Children develop the ability to generate ideas, experiment with media, refine techniques and evaluate their own and others’ work using appropriate artistic vocabulary. Outcomes show clear progression across year groups and reflect secure knowledge of artistic processes and influences. The curriculum fosters positive attitudes towards art, resilience in creative problem-solving and pride in finished work. By the end of primary school, children have developed a strong foundation in artistic knowledge and skills, alongside an appreciation of art’s role in culture and personal expression.
